These are some couplets from some very famous Urdu poets on their views on drinking. This is a conversation that has happened over centuries.

Mirza Ghalib:
"शराब पीने दे मस्जिद में बैठ कर ,
या वो जगह बता जहाँ ख़ुदा नहीं"

Iqbal:
"मस्जिद ख़ुदा का घर है, पीने की जगह नहीं ,
काफिर के दिल में जा, वहाँ ख़ुदा नहीं "

Ahmad Faraz:
"काफिर के दिल से आया हूँ मैं ये देख कर,
खुदा मौजूद है वहाँ, पर उसे पता नहीं "

Wasi:
"खुदा तो मौजूद दुनिया में हर जगह है,
तू जन्नत में जा वहाँ पीना मना नहीं "

Saqi:
"पीता हूँ ग़म-ए-दुनिया भुलाने के लिए,
जन्नत में कौनसा ग़म है इसलिए वहाँ पीने में मजा नहीं"

Shayar:
सब पीते अपने मज़े के लिए,
बेवजह बदनाम गम है..,
तबियत से पी कर देखो,
फिर दुनिया क्या  जन्नत से कम है

Translation
Mirza Ghalib:
Let me drink liquor sitting in a Masjid,
Or show me the place where there is no God.

Iqbal:
Masjid is God's home, not a place for drinking,
Go to the heart of a Kafir (heathen), there is no God there.

Ahmad Faraz:
I am returning after peaking into a Kafir's (heathen's) heart,
God is present there, but he is unware.


Wasi:
God is present everywhere on Earth,
 Go to heaven, there drinking is not prohibited.

Saqi:
I drink to forget my sorrow,
What sorrow is there in heaven, there is no fun in drinking in heaven.

Shayar:
Everybody drinks for their own joy,
They unnecessarily blame the sorrow,
Try drinking for health,
Then Earth will be no less than heaven.
